1st CONVERSATION WITH AN UMMITE - Luis Jiménez Marhuenda, 10 March 1987, from 14:45 to 16:40, duration 1 h 55'
The day before, my wife received a call, but I was not at home and there was no conversation. Naturally, she thought it was a joke.
Ummo - Luis Jiménez Marhuenda?
Luis Jiménez Marhuenda - Given the hearing difficulties, he insists, repeats, reiterates the question. I think it is a joke and say so:
That is very badly done. You imitate them very badly.
(The question is repeated insistently several times. In spite of everything I decide to record the conversation, if only to try to uncover the hoax.)
U. - Mr Aguirre will receive a letter.
(I made a test of the conversation before recording, which I do not remember, though it was nothing important. I begin to be convinced that it might be real. I ask his name.)
U. - My name is (something like) OUA 5 son of OUA 2. We will send a letter to Juan Aguirre. It will contain a yellow band sealed with the mark or stamp of UMMO.
L. - You will send me a letter containing a yellow band marked with something special (I say this to check whether he knows what it will be).
U. - Yes. Radioactivity.
L. - Is the letter received from Manchuria false?
U. - It is false.
L. - Who wrote it?
U. - We do not know.
L. - I would like to talk with you at greater length. On another occasion I spoke with one of your brothers (I am referring to the call received at my home in San Vicente del Raspeig in April 1980). Was it you or another?
U. - It was not me.
L. - When will you grant me the personal contact you promised?
U. - Harmful for you.
L. - Why?
U. - Line tapped. (I hear badly)
L. - Why?
U. - Agents.
L. - But do they think you are extraterrestrials?
U. - They think we are RUSSIANS.
L. - One day they will suspect something.
U. - That is not very important.
L. - Do you know anything of Farriols?
U. - Your brother Farriols is good.
L. - Why do you call me and not Farriols?
U. - We cannot call him.
L. - I believe I am the most modest of all, the last to arrive in this affair.
U. - That is not the criterion.
L. - I consider that I deserve to be called less than others.
U. - We... (rest unintelligible) ... harmful for him.
(Rafael Farriols - I suppose they say they do not call me so as not to provoke a situation that, even indirectly, might harm me)
L. - What should we think of the letter that speaks of the attack in Austria of which your brothers were victims?
U. - It is authentic. ... (?)
L. - However, the Madrid group thinks it is not.
U. - Yes, it is.
(R.F. - A few months later, Antonio Ribera, who had received the letter in question, told me he had had a telephone conversation with a young woman from Alicante who claimed to be the AUTHOR of that letter. In fact she claimed to be the "daughter" of an Ummite, and that her mother was a TERRESTRIAL.
Moreover, the characteristic UMMITE stamp, printed in violet on the letters written from Spain, appeared distorted and blurred on that letter. I myself had thought its origin fraudulent.)
L. - There are outside connotations, doubts arise. What proof could we have to unmask the forgeries?
U. - The present machine is easy to recognise. The typeface has deformations... (rest unintelligible; I suppose he said it was the machine used for the first letters to Sesma. Then he tells me the beginning of the conversation should not have been recorded) ... Also... the yellow band.
L. - Did you record the conversation Juan Aguirre and I had some time ago... and later with Rafael Farriols?
U. - We have recorded that of Farriols and Barrenechea... (he also says something like they will deliberate and let us know about the next meeting. They do not give the date over the telephone).
L. - (Insisting) Do you have the conversation between Aguirre and me in which we talked about you? (I insist on this question because some time ago Aguirre and I reached a conclusion over the telephone: could they have stopped writing to us? could they have forgotten us? They could do many things, but there is something that is ours and in which they could not intervene: our not ceasing to admire them. The affection we have come to feel for them is something they are not going to take away from us. Both Aguirre and I have sublimated this aspect a great deal. Hence my insistence on knowing whether he had heard that conversation.)
U. - It was not possible to pick up that conversation.
L. - Have you heard the conversation between Farriols and me? (I insist on it because Farriols took part in the previous one, talked about my conversation with Aguirre and shows the same emphasis on admiring them)
U. - We do not listen to all conversations.
L. - Had you gone back to your planet?
U. - No. We were on OYAGAA.
L. - In which country?
U. - I cannot say.
L. - (I insist again on the conversation between Aguirre and Farriols mentioned above) Aguirre and I had a conversation, and afterwards also with Farriols, and we were worried at hearing nothing from you. We thought perhaps you had gone back to your planet or, at worst, that you were no longer interested in us...
U. - (First part unintelligible) ... you have been upset through our fault. (He repeats "through our fault" and it seems to me there is sorrow in his words.)
L. - I do not remember having been upset. On the contrary.
U. - No. They are not very well.
L. - But no, I get on very well with everyone.
U. - But among them there have been quarrels.
L. - Your friendship has enriched us greatly.
U. - (Unintelligible)
L. - The pain of some small unimportant quarrel is worth it in exchange for everything you have given us.
U. - We have disturbed your peace.
L. - You do not disturb our peace! On the contrary, you have given us great peace, great harmony.
U. - Not to the others.
L. - Juan Domínguez has written a book about you. What do you think of it?
U. - Excellent.
L. - It has not bothered you?
U. - (Unintelligible)
L. - What do you think of Father López Guerrero? He is a friend of mine and puts forward arguments that do not always agree with yours.
U. - That is natural.
L. - Among the matters on which he differs from you are the Devil and Parapsychology. What is your opinion of the Devil?
U. - The Devil does not exist.
L. - I think he does.
U. - He does not exist.
L. - But the forces of evil exist. The Popes have said the Devil exists. Yes.
U. - He does not exist.
L. - I believe he does. I have the right to think, and I believe he does.
(Here he speaks of the freedom of thought each person must have, and also says something like an encouragement to keep my independence of judgement.)
L. - Could you have some study or proof of the non-existence of the Devil?
U. - What does not exist cannot be demonstrated.
L. - And Saliano? Does he exist?
U. - Yes.
L. - Is he an extraterrestrial?
U. - We have had contacts with him.
L. - What is your opinion of him?
U. - Bad.
L. - Is he an extraterrestrial?
U. - Generic name.
L. - I have questions to ask now on the spur of the moment.
U. - Think before asking them... let them not be recorded.
L. - My questions are of a moral and philosophical order. ... You know my papers sent to everyone in the group.
U. - Yes.
L. - What do you think of them?
U. - Very noble.
L. - Is what I say true?
U. - Partly yes, partly no. (Rest unintelligible)
L. - Which part is mistaken?
U. - I cannot answer.
L. - Can you tell me by letter?
U. - You must be free to think.
L. - But I would like to benefit from what you say.
U. - (Unintelligible: he says something like "obedience").
L. - It is not a matter of obedience!
U. - We must not give you orders.
L. - But we can respect what you say... take notice of what you tell us.
U. - On your own responsibility.
L. - We consider you dear friends, and you cannot prevent our affection.
U. - That is correct. We have feeling for you... (rest unintelligible).
L. - Thank you very much. It must be so, because in the course of a live conversation I heard something I do not remember, but it must have been a show of affection towards us. In any case, you say you cannot do anything for our humanity.
U. - We cannot disturb it... (Unintelligible. It must be listened to live and not recorded at all. He is surely referring to a disagreement among us because I remember he repeats once more "through our fault". Certainly UMMOAELEWE has insisted a great deal: they must not allow disagreements to arise among us because of their presence. Something I do not remember and which cannot be heard on the tape, but which made me reply):
L. - But that was a long time ago... (Here he speaks of Ribera, his book, etc.)
U. - A good person (he is speaking of Ribera), he did not intend to harm us.
L. - Obviously. On the contrary.
Another thing. We would like to receive you in my home, to accept you as friends... (I think he answers "so would we, but..." and the rest cannot be heard.) Don't you think that, in whatever way, our friendship will be more solid if we make contact with one another?
U. - It is impossible at present.
L. - Is it because of the orders you receive from UMMOAELEWE?
U. - (Answer inaudible)
L. - I believe that one day we will be able to have a personal conversation.
U. - One day.
L. - I would like to embrace you with great affection.
U. - We would like to receive a manuscript from you... from all the... (unintelligible) for the museum of Oyagaa. (Here he gives the list sent in the letter received later).
PERSONAL NOTE:
These old notes have been taken from the surviving recording. But the whole conversation was not kept. The tape breaks off, there are pauses, the beginning of the conversation was not recorded, etc.
It is hard for me to listen to it, and many passages have not been transcribed because of recording defects. But from the unrecorded part I remember the following.
He asks me not to record when he calls me again. Obviously I will respect his wish, though I ask him to let me record only so that it serves as a reference. It seems to me he does not want his recording or his voice to be heard by other people. I erased the tape once I had listened to it well and could decipher nothing more. My wife was listening on the other telephone and left the receiver next to the tape recorder. Perhaps the telephone's volume dropped because both were off the hook; perhaps she (my wife) put the mouthpiece end instead of the earpiece.
He told me something more about our freedom and our independence of judgement, so I answered that, using that freedom, I disagreed with his opinion that they would be harmful to us.
He insists that I think about my questions and invites me to ask him whatever interests me. My nerves will play a dirty trick on me, and I fear I seemed stupid or weak to him, because I clearly did not shine. But remembering the questions some friends sent me when in 1980 I hoped to have a personal contact, I took out one which I believe was Farriols's, because I think the subject interests us all:
What is there after death? Is there a heaven or a hell as religion says?
He tells me it was similar, but not as we imagined it. To the question about contacts with the dead, he told me they did not exist. To the question about spiritualism, he told me it was an imposture, that after life no contact could be made.
To the question whether Catholicism was the most authentic religion, his answer was: Christianity. I also remember that, when Farriols was mentioned, he told me he was the most self-sacrificing of my friends. I believe he used that adjective.
I remember nothing more. In the next conversation, if he lets me record (it is not a matter of obedience but of friendly courtesy), I will make him repeat all his words so that they are well recorded. As can be seen in this transcription, there are many "I"s, and clearer ones, because obviously my voice is the one best heard.
Later, talking with my wife and my son, I remembered other things. Talking with my son, I remember that to the question whether he could hear the conversations on another telephone, he told me yes. To the question about him, because after all it was my son, whose studies worry me, and all the rest, he told me: "He must study hard. Let men study, they are made for it. He hopes my son, as a result of this, will begin to devote himself to books and confirm his idea of studying arts, journalism, radio and everything to do with human communication". A matter to follow up.
I am preparing a batch of questions to ask him if he calls again. Many, with your collaboration. I hope next time there will be less disappointment than today. A hug.
